Visited Larkins last evening with friends who visit regularly but it was our first visit and it certainly won't be our last ! At first I ordered the Chatsworth Pork from the menu but our friends asked if ribeye steak was available the waitress went and checked and returned informing us it was I changed my order and what a lovely surprise the steak was outstanding as was the whole evening the food and company in a lovely restaurant was outstanding and I cannot thank the staff enough, you will definitely be seeing more of us in the future, thank you.

We went here for Sunday dinner, at £12.95 for 3 courses and coffee with chocolate at the end it was very good value.
Situated in an old cinema in the town centre the restaurant is on the top (1st) floor, a lift is in situ so it is easily accessible for all.
The restaurant has a light and airy feel about it, and low, piped music throughout. This wasn't too loud as to interrupt conversation as you find in some places.
There is a quieter area with a table large enough for 12+ at the back of the restaurant if you are planning a party.
The food is 80s style, I haven't had a prawn cocktail in years, it is generous in portion size and well cooked, I enjoyed it. I liked the corporation pop served when you go in!
The service was quick, a bit quirky and not particularly polished but I liked that, it feels right and personal, Its a family run business, I like the informality, no airs and graces, it is good, honest food at a reasonable price.
The bar has a good selection of drinks, again at a reasonable price.

The menu on the website is only a sample menu so check by ringing if not sure, parking is on street, there is a small car park nearby.

We went here on a recomendation.I have to question the people who recommended Larkin's. The restaurant is on the first floor (they do have a lift) .We went here to celebrate a special occasion, what a disappointment. We wanted it to be a special day. We never got that.
The majority went for steak. Sadly the majority of the steaks were chewy and tasteless. You do get plenty of veg and chips which sadly doesn't make up for the poor quality of the steak. The service was ok. One of the waitresses was friendly, cheery and helpfully. Sadly, half way through the service another grumpy waitress took over. So unprofessional. Why she is working in the front of house is bewildering.
We had bought a cake and asked for it to be brought to the table after our main meal.
Sweet menus were offered to us first. Weren't asked if we would just like the cake. Obviously trying to get more money out of us.
The cake came over an hour after the main course. Totally ruined the occasion.
I like that its a family business. I don't like the poor service and poor quality of steak. Please keep your family behind the scene. I don't want to see kids in football tops sitting at tables.
It's so unprofessional.

Won't be back.                                                                                                                                                                                                                      Visited April 2014

Message from Larkins': Thank you for your review. We have taken all the points that you have raised on board and are sorry that you were disappointed when you visited; we leave you to question the person who recommended Larkins' to you. It is a little difficult to respond more fully to your specific points given that your visit was in April. All we would say is that had you raised your concerns at the time of your visit then not only could we have offered you an alternative dish but we could have taken the matter up with our butcher; suffice to say we don't recall any other complaints re the quality of our steaks either around the time of your visit or, indeed since.

As for the comments re being offered sweets before the Birthday Cake, on our Early Bird menu, the price of the sweet is included in the tariff and most diners prefer to 'have their cake and eat it' so to speak.

Perhaps Larkins' isn't for you after all

                                                                                                                                      ------------------

Just got back from a very nice lunch at Larkins and thought it was about time I left my comments.

St.Helens RAFA of which I am a member held a very successful Annual Dinner at the restaurant last year. The price quoted was much cheaper than other venues I had approached so I was a little worried as to the quality of the food we would be served. There was no need to worry as the food was excellent and the way in which it was served was very professional. We were given the option of separate tables or formal top table and legs. Being a military function we chose the formal option The restaurant was closed to the general public that night and we had the whole place to ourselves..

As I said it was very enjoyable and we have booked for this year. I was very pleased to be quoted the same price as last year. Where else would do that ? My Branch is so pleased with Larkins that we have an informal early dinner there every second Tuesday. Because we start at 6.30pm we take advantage of their Early bird menu. Three courses and tea or coffee for under £14 ! Again, very well cooked and served by excellent waiting staff. The food is good and there is plenty of it. We very rarely finish all the side dishes.

I would recommend it both for a small dinner for two to a very large formal occasion.

Message from Larkins': Joe, thank you so much for taking the time to write a review of the restaurant. Your kind words are really appreciated and we are delighted that RAFA have honoured us by asking the restaurant to host your local Annual Dinner in 2014.

Like others before and since, you and your fellow members understand what we at Larkins' are all about; good, freshly prepared food served in hearty portion sizes at affordable prices by attentive and friendly staff in a unique setting.

Thanks again and see you all soon!

                                                                                                                                                      ------------------

I phoned and booked a table for Sunday Lunch the night before, upon arrival we weren't booked in but we were shown to a table. Having never been before we were a little unsure if we were in the right place as on entering there was a large Christening Party on one side of the room and diners on the other.
We ordered our meals and couldnt find fault with the food, ample portions all served hot and the service was good. Our only problem was the children running around the room and tables. Not Larkins fault but knowing people are out for a nice meal, the Christening Party could've been a little more considerate.

We haven't been put off visiting again and will hopefully be in very soon.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 Visited July 2014

Message from Larkins':  Thank you so much for your review; yet another first time dinner who has taken to the Fam. Larkin way and loves our cuisine!

Apologies for the mix up with the booking - hope it didn't cause you too much of a panic.

Re the Christening Party, we normally highlight larger parties to people when they book and, to be fair, most parties - which we always endeavour to set up in an area of their own - keep themselves to themselves. Unfortunately, the children in this one got very excited and please accept apologies on behalf of the parents concerned.

We really look forward to seeing you again very soon!

                                                                                                                                                      ------------------

I don't spend much time in St Helens, but ....... my Sister recommended Larkins, so 4 of us popped down there.
The first impression of the place is that it is rather posh, it is set in a beautiful open loft space, with numerous tables laid out in a grand fashion. We were there for the early bird deal (before 7pm) so it was fairly quiet, we were seated and ordered drinks whilst we studied the menu.
My Sister explained to me that it is a totally family run business, and all the members of the family could be seen busying themselves in their various roles.
The reasons I perceive the place to be unique, is that although it is an elaborate setting, the staff are very friendly and down to earth, there are none of the grandiose formalities that you would find scattered across every formal establishment elsewhere, this is the Larkin's restaurant and they do things their way.
So, I haven't even got onto the food yet, but this is the second unique point to the place. St Helens is a Northern town where folk like a decent sized portion, you get trays or perfectly cooked potatoes and huge bowls of perfectly cooked veg, the soup starter was fantastic, I followed it with a huge steak and of course there was a large gravy boat with home made gravy.
One last point, there was a lovely friendly little lady who assisted in serving our table, she was working tirelessly around all the tables to ensure everyone was happy.

In summary, great food, great venue, great service at a great price. Larkin's ticks all the boxes for me, I will definitely be back.

Went to Larkins last night, had the early bird menu and the food was outstanding. Two of us had salmon and one ribeye steak . The salmon and steak were beautifully cooked and presented . Vegetables were fresh and nicely cooked. Nice background music playing, not intrusive. Don't know how they do it for the price . Great place to eat!

Me and my friend went for a spare of the moment meal at Larkins. We had a set menu which was a decent price. The meal didn't look big but it was actually really filling and was perfect before going the cinema. The Budweiser on draft was probably the best that we have had. Hopefully next time I will try the steak.

Visited last year and haven't been back. Preferred their previous location which had more character. Since the move to present site, lacks any atmosphere. Dreary music and tables surrounding a dance floor. This restuarant is fine for the over 60's preparing for the Nursing Home experience. Tips for Larkins - go for a mixed clientele not just the older age bracket. I don't want to have Sunday lunch listening to some old guy on a piano!

Thankyou all so much for making our Golden Wedding celebration night such a wonderful occasion. The presentation of the room, the table service and of course the excellent meals, served piping hot and loads of fresh vegetables, was greatly complimented by all of our 33 guests. The evening flowed well, entertainment, witty speeches and of course some good music and dancing!!  made for a complete success. If we had a problem it was that we unfortunately booked our taxi too early.........we left the party in full swing.

We visited larkins a couple of weeks ago on a Saturday night with some friends. We were surprised how quiet it was until we looked at the prices. Surely the most expensive prices for a Saturday evening meal in the area. The portions were significantly smaller, then what they used to be and we left hungry. The music in the background was way to loud, despite complaining this continued. Music should really be a background noise, in such a social environment. Food was ok, but certainly not worth the Saturday evening prices. Sorry, just being honest

    Well were do I start......

When entering the restaurant the girl pointed to the table that we had booked (the tower table), you expect to be shown and given menus. We had been sat there 10mins when I decided to get up for some menus. We was given one bottle of water for a table of 12 and this was also dumped on our table.

This was only the start...when reviewing the menu it was clearly evident that is bore no resemblance with the menu on the website. There was no fish on it and the steak price had increased from an already expensive £21 to £25. When asking the waitress why she said she didn't know and will get a supervisor. We waited for this person for a good 10 minutes. The owner of the restaurant come over and informed us that the menu online is a sample menu, I asked her to point us to where on the website this stated this because it didn't! She proceeded to say the fish is seasonal (when has fish become SEASONAL) and that the price of the steak had increased because the price of meat had increased in the last 2 weeks...by £4 really????

Anyway, we choose a dish off the menu, with one of the party only having starters as there was nothing on the mains menu that was appetising enough. The meals come, the portions where tiny for the price and was accompanied by a poor selection of vegetables served on very dated metal plates. The chips were quite notably frozen..not what you expect from an 'al a carte' restaurant!!

One of the meals was incorrect and although she said she'd change it, she proceeded to say, you never ordered that as I didn't write it down. She came 10 mins later to our table whilst we was eating to show us the order. It's wasn't our fault she had written it down wrong and she should have accepted shed made a mistake and left it at that ...very pedantic!!!

The add insult to injury 2 people on the table found pieces of metal in their food..what can only be described as bits from a pan cloth. We was already questioning hygiene standards after noticing an unpleasant body odour from one of the staff!!

They are aiming to be a high class restaurant and failing miserably.

After booking I read bad reviews and was told from family that it wasn't good...we proceeded to give it a try, as after all there is some good reviews on here (not sure why).

Overall I would advise against visiting here as you will be very disappointed !!!!!

However, whilst we acknowledge that some of the issues you have raised in your review were aired at the time, in keeping with most of the less than complimentary reviews posted to this review site, most of the points you raise were not brought to our attention when we could have addressed them properly and to our mutual satisfaction i.e. at the time of your visit. Indeed we are further perplexed as your party did leave a cash tip!

First of all however, we must acknowledge that there is no excuse for not showing your party to your table properly especially as you were booked in the Tower Room. Whilst we apologise for this and have discussed this lack of attention to detail with the staff members involved, our recollection regarding the rest of your experience prior to ordering your meals differs markedly to yours.

Turning now to the comments you make regarding the menu bearing no resemblance to that published on our website we must draw your attention to the fact that these are only sample menus. This is not only stated in the tab that you have to click on to navigate to the “Sample menus & wine list” page but also in the heading of that page when it opens. Furthermore, the opening line of the first paragraph states “……for a sample of our”. However, your experience tells us that despite the word "sample" being used on 3 separate occasions as a visitor to our website navigates to the appropriate web page, it is not clear enough and we will now review the wording.

With regard to the pricing, we can but thank you for bringing this to our attention. The anomaly has been traced to the last time a minor change was made to our web pages; the increase in the price of Fillet Steak was actually made in September 2013 and we can't imagine how you came to be under the impression that the increase was in the last 2 weeks.

Turning now to your comments regarding fish being seasonal. Fish is seasonal in so much as whilst it is feasible to purchase most fish types for most of the year, at certain times i.e. when a type is out of season in home waters, it becomes prohibitively expensive to serve. Also, we do have many regular customers and we ensure that we rotate the fish menu based on what is available and to offer variation of choice.

We consider the menu on offer at the time of your visit to be very varied. Of course we do acknowledge that we can’t accommodate every diner’s preference all the time. That said, you fail to mention that 2 members of your party ordered venison which we made available even though it wasn’t on Saturday’s a la carte menu – we doubt that many restaurants would be able to or wish to do this.

As for portion size well, we cannot agree and can only refer you to the numerous reviews that state quite the contrary. We do not serve frozen chips and will bring your observations to our supplier. All our service dishes are perfectly fit for purpose and in no way dated.
We acknowledge that your waitress – a senior member of the family team we might add – did record your order for a Fillet Steak incorrectly resulting in a member of your party being served Filet Mignon in error. Our offer to replace the dish with a freshly cooked Fillet Steak was declined by the diner concerned and in showing you the written order, your waitress was not being pedantic, rather she was trying to assure you that you would be charged for the dish served and not for the more expensive Fillet Steak

Moving on to your comments regarding pieces of metal being allegedly found in the food served. We take this issue very seriously and since reading your review we have inspected all possible sources of this contaminant without finding any trace of anything that could have remotely lead you to conclude there were pieces of metal in your food. Again, if only you had brought this to our attention at the time of your visit not only could we have served an alternate meal but, more importantly, we could have analysed the contaminate to ensure the source was positively identified and the appropriate action taken be it in regards to our equipment etc. or in collaboration with the suppliers of our ingredients.

To conclude, we found little of substance in your review, especially given you did leave a cash tip and failed to raise most of the issues that you raised in your review when you had the ideal opportunity, i.e. at the time of your visit.

However, we accept your right to express your view and as noted above we will review our marketing materials and staff training in the light of some of the points you have raised. At the same time we refute your view that we are ‘failing miserably’ and draw great comfort from the vast majority of reviews made that confirm our aim to offer exceptional food and fantastic service in great surroundings

From the outside you wouldn't know the restaurant was there as it is upstairs and low key (there is a lift). The restaurant is large and airy with a dance floor so would be great for parties or weddings............ with modern decor and relaxed atmosphere with keyboard player. Such a change from when it was on North Road.

The menu is not vast but there is enough to satisfy most people. It isn't cheap, but you get what you pay for. The accompaniments are all fresh, nice chunky fresh veg, lovely spuds. No complaints from anyone and we all had different meals. Really well presented food and nice extra touches with the teas and coffees. We enjoyed a lovely relaxed meal and weren't rushed by staff. Will definitely be going back again soon! Lovely!

We've been going to Larkins for many years and once again they did not disappoint. Excellent food, cooked to absolute perfection as always, polite and friendly staff and lovely surroundings. Very reasonable prices, in fact just an all round perfect evening. We will definitely be returning and can't recommend them highly enough. We have had many meals in their various establishments across the town and have never once been disappointed, they are the only restaurant I know of that has maintained their high standards throughout. Well done to all the staff and thank you for some memorable times..

This is the first time I've visited larkins since they changed buildings and I was so disappointed. A number of us including children went for Sunday lunch, when we arrived we were told that it's just 1 set menu for £12.95 but no childrens menu, but we were advised that we can just get plates for the kids and fill them as there's plenty of food. How wrong they were! When the meals came the meat was like rubber, the roast potatoes were just deep fried tinned boiled potatoes and there was probably enough for 1 potato each!! Certainly not plenty to go round! I was so disappointed and I won't be visiting again!

Message from Larkins': Oh dear, we're so sorry that you were disappointed when you visited. The service you received fell way below our normal standards and we can only apologise. You've obviously been a regular when we were at North Road and we can understand your disappointment when your latest visit didn't come up to your expectations. All we can suggest is that you do visit again and that you make yourself known to the Duty Manager so that we can restore your faith in our restaurant.

We went to Larkins to celebrate the New Year and what a fabulous time we had. The 7 course meal was exceptional. The celebratory decorations both on the table and on the dance floor at midnight were second to none. We have, over the last few years, spent an awful lot of money on New Year celebrations and each and everyone of them were a big let down (including an expensive trip to Paris). Finally we have found a New Year venue that we will most certainly use again and again. Many thanks to the Larkin family for their friendliness and to the staff for their hard work . Cheers.

I have just come back from an evening in Larkins with 4 friends. We have all enjoyed ourselves. The food is very good quality. It is well prepared, served piping hot and there is plenty of it. The restaurant is very nice, light bright and spacious. There is also a pianist. This sets just the right tone for me, as it is not too noisy, so you can carry on a conversation comfortably without having to shout over the entertainment. Another nice touch is the cloakroom, so if you dont want to be bothered with coats hanging off the backs of chairs, and where to put wet umbrellas, you just leave them with the lady at the cloakroom!
All in all a good evening. Will definately go again.

Fantastic! Amazing! Superb! What a great night. 62 of us decended on these truly awsome people. Ages ranged from 13 to 80's. The party atmosphere hit you as you walked in.The food was hot and tasty and plenty of it. 5 courses all perfect and some of the best service I've ever had the pleasure of experiencing. Lots of staff on hand and nothing too much trouble. If you wanted more you just had to ask. Soft drinks for the young people were replenished before they could ask.
A big thank you everyone for all your hard work in the preparation leading up to and including this great night. A special mention has to go to Vicky and Simon for all their help and advice. Everyone I spoke to thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

This was my first attempt at organising our annual "Dining In" event and I don't have any regrets. I've already booked again for next year.

We decided to have a meal at Larkins on Saturday evening at the last minute, we discovered it was a French themed evening and decided to still try it................ Wow what a surprise that such a superb little restaurant is hidden away just off Duke Street. The restaurant was decorated tastefully and we where shown to our table by a polite waitress. The menu was varied and had a number of choices to suit most tastes. To start I had the goats cheese and my girlfriend had the mussels, both of which where outstanding. The duck followed, which was delicious and Creme Brûlée to finish. I could not fault any if the food and the service was just right, not to intrusive. The staff where pleasant and knowledgeable and seemed to have a passion for there work as they sold the burns night in January to me and I will be booking that shortly and this time I will be taking a group of friends.

In conclusion,as somebody who eats out socially weekly and I few times a month with business I try a few restaurants, and this is one that I will definitely be going back to. Great food, good service and a relaxed atmosphere. 9.9/10 from me.

It has taken me some months to consider whether to write this review but as i used others peoples reviews to decide to go to larkins i decided i must do . we booked a party of 16 to go to larkins for a 4oth birthday party some time in advance but as we picked up the menus so that we could order in advance to help the staff we were informed that it was an 80s night and as we were told so late we decided it was too late to change our party`s venue and go ahead .a huge mistake ! ive been to larkins before and found the food fine but not on a themed night ! the food was average at best and once the entertainment started it was difficult to get the staff`s attention , even gravy was to much trouble as they said they had none! the entertainment was extremely loud and the flashing lights right in front of your table whilst your trying to eat was awful and at 25.00 ahead its not somewhere i`d go again                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  Visited June 2013, posted review November 2013

We spent a very enjoyable evening at this beautifully restored old building - formally a cinema. The atmospere was pleasant and the food well presented, perfectly cooked and served with large dishes of well cooked vegetables.
The staff were unobtrusive but attentive to our needs. The live music was enjoyable but a little loud for us as we were with friends we had not seen for some months and we wanted to chat.
The prices were a little high but it was a Saturday evening and I understand that they do an "early bird" deal on weekday evenings at a very reasonable price.

Went to Larkins to celebrate a 70th birthday so as you can imagine our party ages ranged from 10yrs up, despite the website stating chicken nuggets made to order they where unable to accommodate this! The food is lovely but not cheap and with fussy children the only thing we could order from the A LA Carte menu was three portions of scampi (closest thing to resemble a nugget!) they did charge as small portions but never the less two of the children didn't eat them so was a complete waste of money. Such a shame, I can't quite grasp if scampi is on the menu and chicken why they couldn't batter some chicken as they do state all food is freshly prepared to order! I can recommend Larkins for good adult food and the staff where very apologetic and helpful, my tip would be do not take your children unless they are happy to eat adult A La Carte meals.

Went to larking (sic) last night to celebrate a 50th birthday for a work friend , it was a themed jazz night which we thought could be interesting ! . When we arrived the room was decorated beautifully and the tables were just as nice , as more people arrived we noticed this wasn't going to be for us !! ............ . Then the band started to play which was extremely loud especially as we were trying to order food . .............The food was exceptional , and we all enjoyed our meal with no complaints.
The bar got crowded at times and I thought the drinks were very expensive , we paid £25 a head for the meal and entertainment ,which would have been good value for money if the entertainment was our cup of tea , but we found it to be an acquired taste .............
I would definitely recommend eating here on a normal night but would advise be sure about the entertainment you are watching before paying £25 .
We left after the pudding 10 pm as we couldn't stand the noise any longer , which was a shame as we thought we could spend the whole night there .

It wasn't a night we enjoyed but the food saved the day ! Well done chef .

Message from Larkins': Thank you for taking the time to write a review. It was a shame that the Jazz Night wasn't for you but, as you say, such an evening isn't for everyone.......We are pleased that the meal was to your liking............ our desserts are scrummy!

                                                                                                                                       ------------------

Went to Larkins ........... as a party of 14. Lots of choice on the menu for starters and mains. The food was exceptionally good. I didn't have steak but those who did said it was beautiful and cooked as requested. I had lamb chops which were very good. Didn't have dessert as we were there for a birthday and had taken our own cake, though I know from past visits that they are home made and delicious.
There was a singer on who was good and not too obtrusive. Worth a visit

I went to Larkins last night with my Hubby and Mum. Room is lovely and well lit .................We were taken to our table and given a very good menu for choices for the early bird deal at £12.95. We had a bottle of corporation pop...very funny lable. Pate was yummy for starter ..........egg mayonaise was very nice .................. Mains of homemade scampi was very good, roast beef very tasty and goats cheese salad was very fresh and varied...separate veg and chips/spuds very plentiful. We were very full but ..........(took) .......a pudding...again lots of choice..large trifle portion was delicious as was meringue...coffee and mints finished us off. We were so full! Lovely room with nice background music and unintrusive staff...very enjoyable and will be going again...maybe on the special jazz night. Thanks

Went to Larkins to celebrate our wedding anniversary - and once again enjoyed an excellent meal - with friendly staff. We can especially recommend the deserts. The new restaurant is well set out and well worth a visit.

I just don't understand the good reviews on here whatsoever. Booked table for 16. Table for half 7, door wasnt open when we arrived, then we were all to stand ................... at the bottom of the stairs as they were not yet ready ..............We were given a seating area raised slightly from the main room ........... Long wait for menus ....................
Trying to order drinks was a nightmare. 3 bottles of water on the table that were not replaced during the evening. Wine took so long to come. ............waitress ........ comes to take our order, I think over 40 minutes after arriving.

Mushrooms for my starter just so clearly out of a packet. Same with the filo prawns. .............My main was a fillet steak, three of us ordered our sauce on the side and of course it came swimming it. So fed up by this point i couldn't be bothered changing it. £25 for this. The sauce had a film on and looked so unappetising. .................Two big platters of chips in the middle I didn't even bother trying. They were just cheap, frozen packet chips. Vegetables poor, microwaved. How can a carrot not be nice.

My steak was soft at least but had to wait ages for another plate because of course mine was full of sauce so was cold by this point.
My aunties rib eye steak was so fatty. The sauce with the lamb chops was horrible, and my dad who usually eats anything didnt even eat the chips.
I just can't believe the price. If it was nice or fresh or homemade then we would be happy to pay!!! But not for such cheap food tried to present posh. ................No children's menu, just a small portion of what is on menu.

Now what was worse? Food or service? No where near as attentive as you would expect for a large party. ..............Just so slow everything. Had to ask for more bread twice as it never turned up.Live music just awful. Nothing else needs to be said.

Whole experience just laughable, we all couldn't wait to leave. Didnt even contemplate a dessert. Over £400 for the evening - worst money ever spent. I don't think I can put into words how bad it is. Basically just cheap packet food they are trying to pass off as fine dining, how can the chef call himself a chef. Not one person enjoyed themselves.

Message from Larkins': Thank you for your review and apologies for the delay in posting a reply

We are sorry that you did not enjoy your visit which we must say came as a complete surprise to us as a number of guests in your party said they did; it is so frustrating when guests don’t complain at the time of their visit when we can address their issues so that the review can be more balanced.

That said, in response to your lack of understanding as to the good reviews on here, we can only suggest you contact the reviewers direct and ask them.

Turning to the points you raise:-

Our recollection is that you were shown to your table at 7.30. We note that some of your party arrived up to 20 minutes earlier and rather than leave them outside in the rain we let them in to our, admittedly small, reception area; we could not show you to your table early as parts of the restaurant through which you would have had to walk were not ready.

Our website states we serve the freshest food in town. Clearly, this does not imply all the food we serve is fresh on the contrary; some of the ingredients / components of our dishes are bought in pre-prepared. This is common practice in the industry and to suggest otherwise shows a lack of understanding of commercial catering. The filo prawns are a good example; they are bought in fresh but already pre-prepared in the pastry.

We do not use a micro wave for the cooking of vegetables. Had you brought your concerns to us on the night we would have happily shown you around the kitchen to illustrate this.

As for supplies of bread and water. The bread was fresh (albeit we do not bake our own) but, being an artisan recipe, it is not to everyone’s palate. We do not, as a matter of course, replenish these and don’t recall that you asked for more.

With regards to palate, we feel we cater for all tastes and we are sorry that some of our dishes weren’t to some of the members of your party. Again, had you brought your issues to our attention at the time then we would have done our best to address them; perhaps by offering an alternate.

Your comments regarding the attitude of our staff have been noted and have been discussed with the individuals concerned; please accept our sincere apologies if you were offended in any way by the service you received.

To conclude, thank you for your review. We have taken the constructive criticism onboard in the spirit we assume you intended. We will all learn from this event.

This was supposed to be a day to remember as it was my 37 anniversary starting with a breakfast at Larkin's. we arrived at 10.05 as it should open the door at 10, door was locked but shutter up so we knew someone was in. waited for five mins and the rung the bell to let them know we were there, but then out of a door inside a chap saw us shouted to someone that we were there then went back in leaving us outside, then waited some 5 min's again and rung the bell, some one came down the stairs but again didn't open the door or a say anything to us just went into the door inside and left us outside again. so we left Larkin's and will .NEVER RETURN. on two occasions we were IGNORED AND LEFT OUTSIDE. NO SIGN WAS ON THE DOOR, until we left, which said that the restaurant will not open today for breakfast .WE LOOKED FIRST

Message from Larkins': Having reviewed our actions on the day in question we must acknowledge that we did fall down in communicating the fact that we could not open on time due to circumstances beyond our control. It was a case of one member of staff thinking they had posted the appropriate signage and another thinking the same. This is no excuse for ignoring you when you attempted to gain entry and please accept our apologies

Message from Larkins': We recently hosted the Annual Dinner for St Helens RAFA ; they clearly had a fabulous evening:-

To Tony and all the staff at Larkins'.......................................On behalf of everyone who attended our dinner last Saturday can I thank you all most sincerely for providing probably the best formal dinner with which I have been involved whilst a member of St.Helens branch of RAFA.

Everyone was bowled over not only with the quality of the meal you provided but with the superb professionalism of the staff. Quite a number of the members and our guests remarked on the genuine friendliness shown to them by all the staff. I have to say it is the first time I can recall a member of the catering staff volunteering to assist with the selling of raffle tickets ! That help was most welcome.

It would be hard to pick out a special part of the menu but it was noted that when the sweet course was served the room went very quiet It would seem that we were all to intent on savouring that "death by chocolate" desert !

Once again,Tony, our thanks go out to you and your staff for a wonderful night. I am sure it won't be too long before your having to put up with us again

I ate there last week and we had a lovely evening. I'd not been to Larkins for a number of years and was very pleasantly surprised by the new location. The space was bright and airy, with a large dance floor around which the dining tables were arranged. There is a well stocked and reasonably priced bar.

We went as a large group (17 people) and were easily accommodated with the tables arranged in a large rectangle so we could all converse across the table. We had the 3 courses for £12:95 and it was excellent value for money.......... and it was all lovely................more than enough to go around us all.

The staff were all very friendly and accommodating.............We all agreed it was a great night out. I'm sure we'll be back..............

Table of 4 booked for a birthday and we were not going to be disappointed . The room and entertainment were lovely and was spotlessly clean . We were greeted by lovely staff and everyone met our needs to the highest of standards . On 1st look at menu we thought it was quite pricy but when we got the food it looked and tasted delicious . I've been a regular customer at Larkin's restaurant for years and it has always been top quality service and food, with the English breakfast being far and away the best in town. Recently however there has been quite a dramatic increase in price to the point where you literally get half the food on your plate and have to pay 1 pound per item to make the basic breakfast into a full english. ..........Don't get me wrong here the previous quality and amount of food did warrant a price increase and if the original breakfast had gone up by 2 or 3 pounds I wouldn't have batted an eyelid.

Despite this I have been back a couple of times because i liked the food so much until most recently when I found the original decent butchers sausages replaced with bog standard cheap chip shop sausages. Also my food was swimming in oil and I had to mop it up with my napkin. It's sad to say guys that you have lost customers in myself and my family simply because your price increase is too much and the quality has dropped.

                                                                                                                                                                                                Visited August 2013

Message from Larkins': Thank you for your feedback from which we are disappointed to read that you have decided to take your custom elsewhere. As you can imagine, the decision to re-price our breakfast menu wasn't taken lightly but given that we haven't increased its pricing in at least 5 years we could not absorb the numerous increases in food costs any longer. Having thought long and hard, including discussing the options with a number of customers, it was decided to charge on the basis we do now and, to be honest, this change has been favorably received by most of our customers.

As for the sausages served when you last visited, the change you noted was temporary due to problems at our suppliers. Our original 'butchers sausages' are back in stock and on our menu. Finally, the point you make re the way in which your meal was presented is a valid one. Such presentation is always unacceptable and we would have served you a fresh meal had you brought it to our attention at the time.

We are sorry to have lost your custom; of course, you are always welcome here at Larkins' and we would hope that, given your long patronage, you might review your decision in the light of this reply.

Dined recently on my first ever visit to St Helens - it certainly won't be my last based on Larkins!
The food was both plentiful and of excellent quality and the desserts are out of this world! Whilst I visited at a lunch time, I can imagine it being a brilliant place to be during the evening entertainment they put on. "The Tower Room" also would be a really great place to have a meal for a family special occasion. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this restaurant.

Really wanted to like it.........But for value for money it just didn't happen, customer service was excellent had a laugh over the entertainment (very cheesy but good fun all the same). We both left still hungry after spending a huge amount (to us anyway) there is nothing really in the area to compare Larkins ..................

I would go again though purely for the fact it's a lovely building, nice service but maybe just for a treat and not a regular thing.

Message from Larkins': Glad you enjoyed even if you didn't feel your meal represented  value for money.....we can't please everyone all of the time...and we know that our entertainment doesn't float everyone's boat albeit that feedback tells us that most of our diners do like the broad spectrum we offer.      I visited Larkins again recently with my family, we have dined regularly .....................whether at lunch, or of an evening for the very good value "Early-Bird."

We were both............ very dissapointed to hear about the recent staffing losses to Larkins.. .......... we were informed multiple members of staff have left in recent weeks.. a few of whom I think were excellent at making us feel welcome .......................and will honestly be missed by us, as we looked forward to seeing the same face serving us ......................

I feel that this is a terrible shame, as a regular............ like to see the same smiling face on my visits, getting to know people well enough for a little banter or cheeky joke.. and feel that losing staff that are a integral part of the 'essence', and 'atmosphere' that is Larkins is a pity.

I understand, that as the name suggests, the business is run by the family, however it is the waiters and bar staff also that make an experience memorable... .............

The food was, as always, top notch! The sherry trifle devine! and the service pretty much to its usual standard! Although being a busy Sunday it was clear to see that staff level was an issue ............

Hang on to your staff Larkins, they make or break many businesses! Luckily in your case they make people want to return time and time again.

Aside from that don't change a thing! Our kids love the place, one even talking about enquiring for his wedding reception when they finally get hitched!

Message from Larkins': Thank you ever so much for your detailed review which can be read in full on Tripadvisor but which we have edited a little here for space not tenor. Your comments re staffing, both quality and levels are spot on and we endeavour to hold on to good staff as long as we can. However, the nature of the business is such that we cannot offer a 'career path' and turnover of staff can be high in the sector. Both of our recent 'leavers' have moved on to avenues new one within and one outside the trade. Unfortunately the opportunities they found came up out of the blue and so we were left with a bit of a hole until new staff can be recruited, a process which is well in hand.

Message from Larkins': Thank you for your review which we are clearly disappointed to read that you did not have a good experience. The nature of the venue is such that we do use the dance floor area for dining from time to time but all that is different to other areas is the floor covering. As for pricing, we are in a very competitive marketplace and have to say that the vast majority of diners tell us that we do provide excellent value for money. Finally, with regards to the quality of the food served to you, had you brought you concerns to our attention when you dined, we would have looked to address such concerns.

                                                                                                                               ------------------

I have been a few times for the early bird menu and can honestly say that it's excellent value for money. Obviously the choices are limited but there are 4 choices for starters and main courses and they have a great choice of desserts. The food was lovely and plentiful and for £12.95 for 3 courses plus coffee it really can't be beaten for value. The only thing that I could fault was that our empty glasses weren't removed from the table and as it was a large party we ended up having to move them ourselves as the table was beginning to get cluttered. However this is only a minor problem and not one that would stop me from returning.
    Keep up the good work!

Message from Larkins': Thank you for your review from which we were delighted to see that you enjoyed your visit. That said, please accept our sincere apologies for not clearing your table promptly; the fact that we had a large party in at the time of your visit is no excuse and our service to you fell  well below our usual high standards - sorry.

                                                                                                                               ------------------

The whole experience was like being transported back to the early 80's. The menu is from the 80's. We started with pâté...tasted more like potted meat and was served with BRANSTON PICKLE??? On a positive note, plenty of toast. Main course of steak which was over cooked because the waiter couldn't get his head round 'rare to medium'. I asked for french mustard. i was given the jar which was virtually empty and what was lwdt was dried up. Chips were piping hot and good. Potatoes were tinned as were the peas. Friend had lamb which looked very unappetising. Positively - the deserts were good. It was well patronised and, from looking at the reviews, is clearly well liked by a lot of people...

Message from Larkins': Thank you for your review. We are sorry that your party didn't fully enjoy your meals. There are a number of points that we would like to comment upon. All our pâte (which is made on site to a long-standing recipe) is normally served with onion chutney. Unfortunately, due to a problem at our suppliers, we were forced to serve with sweet pickle when you dined . Out potatoes and peas are certainly not tinned but new potatoes are on the small side at the moment. There is no excuse for the issues re the cooking of your steak nor the standard of the mustard. Please accept our apologies noting that we have discussed the matter with the staff members concerned. As for the menu, we note you chose from our Early Evening menu. By its very nature this is not as varied as our Dinner menu and reflects the demand of our regular customers.

Five of us visited for early lunch from the set menu before 7.30pm, and the food was fabulous as usual.
The new premises is delightful with a relaxed yet refined atmosphere in a lovely spacious setting. The table settings and arrangements are very impressive, along with the complete refurbishment - very tasteful.
The quality, quantity and presentation of the food, along with the friendliness of the staff are a credit to the North West as it would be hard to be beaten on such a high level of quality and service. Thanks for a great tasty meal, we will see you again soon.

We have been to Larkin's twice now on a Sunday & on both occasions had good food with proper vegetables, only criticism was the lift wasn't working & one of our group had to struggle upstairs, hopefully that will be resolved by the time we go again, later this month.

We were going out for the day one Sunday with our two good friends and couldn't decide where to eat. They told us that the previous week they had gone to Larkins and really enjoyed the food. They asked us if we would care to try it. I must admit I was not convinced because when it was in North Rd I would not even think of going there. ............ We were greeted on arrival by a member of staff who was very pleasant and welcoming. They have a lift which I was very pleased about................ When I walked out of the lift I was very pleasantly surprised it was a big nicely decorated area. We were shown to a table and given the menu, my jaw dropped to see the wide variety of starter, main and desert. As each course arrived I was delighted, the food is excellent. The staff are very friendly. Suffice to say we have been frequently since and will continue to do so

At Larkin’s for a family birthday and we couldn’t fault the food – it was tasty and plentiful, with a nice array of vegetables. It was, however, a little on the pricey side compared to other local restaurants. The staff were friendly and efficient without being obtrusive and it would have been a fabulous night out except for the one thing that totally spoiled it – the “entertainment”. A singer who mauled many a favourite song and at such a volume that conversation was impossible – even with the person sat next to you. The whole point of having a family get together in a restaurant not a pub or a bar was for the chance to catch up. Something a little less obtrusive would have made it a lovely evening but if evenings are always accompanied by such loud ‘singing’ then we won’t be returning

Message from Larkins': We are glad that the reviewer and his/her family enjoyed their meal. clearly, we feel that our prices are competitive when seen in the light of the overall experience of an evening at our restaurant. As we are unsure which evening the reviewer visited, we can't comment specifically on the entertainment we offered that evening. However, had the reviewer brought his/her concerns to our attention at the time we would have looked to move the party to a quieter area of the restaurant. Indeed, this is one of the advantages of having our 'Tower' area which is in an acoustically quiet area.

I have been going to Larkins since I was a little girl..............I loved going into their old premise and thought it was a really nice old fashioned but quirky building. The staff have always been very attentive and kind ..........I have been reading some of the negative reviews that have been put up on here and was very shocked and surprised by some comments. ....... The food is excellent, the prices are great and the staff, well as mentioned above, they are all lovely people. I could compliment this business all day long, but I think you all should go down yourself and experience it! Loving the new building they are in, it's very modern and sophisticated. Love Larkins, I will be going for a very long time, that's for sure! LONG LIVE LARKINS!

We were booked in at another (chain) restaurant in St Helens, but when we got there the kitchens were shut. Panic ensued - how to get another booking at zero notice? On the off-chance one of our group phoned Larkins, it was mid-week and they were able to accommodate. There were 12 of us, and when we arrived they'd put us on a big round table which was great................ The food was the early evening menu, and several of the party were pleasantly surprised at the new surroundings, the quality and choice of the food, and how good the service was. We were able to take our time and enjoy our get together, and the food was ample, well cooked and enjoyable. We agreed that we would go there again for our outings, it's a no-brainer, good food, service, convenience - what's not to like?

Went for the early evening menu, family party of 9 including 3 boys aged 7 to 11. Good food, ample portions and good service, despite the restaurant being quite full - it was Friday evening. Don't let the modest entrance put you off. It's huge when you get upstairs. A marked difference from their old place in North Road, and very good value

Been here a few times with family & partner. We went for Sunday lunch & the food was good old traditional English style food that not many places serve any more! The portions are quite large & value for money! The place was pretty busy with a lot of older clientele returning weekly. Advise booking at weekends

I visit Larkins quite often .............. to be honest I am a Saturday morning/lunch customer. The new restaurant is great its spacious, pleasent and a great use of the old Plaza. The staff are fantastic and always polite and cheerful but best of all the food is really nice............. the full English breakfast and I have no issues saying this breakfast is the best in St Helens by far ( trust me I have tried most of them). Every time we go we get a warm welcome, good service and great food and all for around a fiver each ! Well done to all the staff at Larkins. Oh just one thing I forgot they even have a lift for those who struggle with stairs.

On Wednesday evening there were 8 of us and we were warmly welcomed as our coats were deposited in the cloakroom. Our table was just the right size for conversation, sharing wine, and eating of course. The beautiful spacious room, with its wonderful curved ceiling, rescued from when the building was the Oxford Cinema many decades ago, makes an attractive and interesting setting. The conversion is superbly done and Larkins must be the best appointed restaurant in town. The service was excellent and there is a very friendly atmosphere. The menu was impressive, given that we were there for the 'early evening special' and I really enjoyed my meal, especially 'Ma Larkins' Trifle'.

This was our first visit in the new premises - spacious and well set out, makes it a much nicer dining experience. Unfortunately, the food shows no such improvement. It was a very disappointing roast dinner: wafer thin meat but the worst part is that all the vegetables are tinned. - potatoes, carrots, peas, green beans. I would gladly pay another £2 if it meant getting fresh veg. Staff, Starters and desserts very nice but I wouldn't have a roast there again.

Message from Larkins': We are glad that the reviewer agrees with us that the new restaurant is so much better that our 'old' premises but we are clearly unhappy that they found the food so disappointing. We have, of course, responded direct to the reviewer via tripadvisor, but have to underline that all our vegetables are cooked from fresh. But, we can always do better and are looking at a new supplier which, if our early expectations are confirmed will enable us to boast...."we serve 'farm fresh' vegetables". Watch this space for full details soon!

We went to Larkin's as we had never been there ...........so off we went a large group of us and was put on a suitable table the food was good at first but the bar service was very disappointing as the table was not emptied of used glasses by anyone but went back again despite this setback .............BIG MISTAKE ....... First Couse was soup and tasted like it came from a tin bread with it was stale and not appetising at all, then the main course so we had different meals for the main course, plenty of carrots and peas and potatoes but the potatoes were very bland compared to what we had the first time we went the chips looked like and tasted like frozen not fresh produce .......... the condiments gravy etc. came some time into the meal, then the final insult to any one's taste buds was the desert ,it was not fresh at all and the taste was even worse than what the poor look of it,and again the used glasses had not been removed(so this issue has not been addressed)
I have never seen a downturn in a restaurant service as this in such a short time and on top of this the prices have gone up a substantial amount. Overall I will not be going back there and would advise anyone to go else ware

Message from Larkins': As the reviewer took the trouble to contact the restaurant direct with their concerns, we have made a full response direct to the reviewer. We have also posted and briefly replied to the review on tripadvisorAs noted above, all feedback, both negative and positive is greatly appreciated and we strive to address all issues raised. To that end and noting that we endeavour to source fresh ingredients wherever possible, we have passed the reviewer's comments back to the suppliers of our breads, soups, and potatoes. We have spoken to the staff who served the reviewer and his party as not clearing away empty glasses etc promptly is simply not acceptable. Finally, we understand that the reviewer and his party opted to choose from our Early Bird Menu. Whilst we have recently increased the tariff on this menu by £1 to £12.95, we do not accept that this is a 'substantial' increase and remain content that this represents excellent value for money for a 3 course + coffee / tea meal and are disappointed that the reviewer feels otherwise.

We would be delighted to host the reviewer and his party again in the future should they wish to dine with us.

Today I tried the Larkins in the new location for Mother's Day. The new venue is a lot better as its no longer like sitting in ur grans front room.............The best thing of all is the food is still as delicious as always. We were a party of 5 and all enjoyed our food, no complaints there what so ever...............The atmosphere was pleasant, there was a man playing the organ which is not my cup of tea but the older customers were enjoying it. The staff were pleasant, and oh boy they worked so hard because the place was packed. The tables were set beautifully with fresh daffodils. Price wise what a bargain 3 courses for £13, under priced ..............Things that can be improved apon is sorting out some kind of waiting area for customers before the table becomes available

Message from Larkins: As always, we will be responding in full to this reviewer via tripadvisor. We are mindful of the issues re our waiting area and are looking at this. A difficult one on such a busy day as it would reduce capacity and we had to turn away and disappoint so many who left it until too late to book.

We were really looking forward to the new Larkins. The venue is stunning they have done a great job on the decor. However, this is not cheap and they are pitching themselves as high end dinning. The receptionist looked bored and we felt that we had interrupted her phone conversation when we arrived, not a very nice welcome. Once inside we waited ages for a menu ............. Another long wait for ordering. ......................The staff did not appear co ordinated and not sure if they allocate them tables to serve........ .........and were not very attentive. The food was good- worth the money and presented well but I did expect a little more finesse and flavouring ................................Larkins food is good I enjoyed what I ate but please get a grip of the service and make sure a welcome smile is recived.

We are already reviewing the standard of service at  reception / table and the occasional delays in service but please see our menu page in this regard. Re the comment re our pricing (and remembering that we don't as yet know what time the reviewer visited), we do offer a four course menu for £12.95 at lunch and early evening which, we feel, offers exceptional value.

We visited Larkins around 5.20 today. initially the service was ok. Although the staff at the entrance, need to be put to better use, ............I think the bar staffs responsibility should be to provide drinks as their sole duty. The food was Average, but the waiting inbetween courses was too long. The busier the restuarant became the less organised the staff looked. The new venu is impressive, but feel attention to detail and staff training is going to let the business down.

Message from Larkins: We will be responding in full to this reviewer via tripadvisor. Clearly we are disappointed to receive a review of this nature but do take comfort from the positive comments made. We will be discussing the issues raised with our staff and, rest assured, we will learn from the feedback received. In particular, we did have a breakdown in communication on the day in question which meant that bookings which were taken late in the afternoon were not passed on to the Restaurant Manager. This resulted in insufficient waiting staff being brought in to deal with the last minute bookings as well as an overall feeling of disorganisation.

My husband and children have often visited Larkins at the old venue and my son wanted to go for his birthday today at the new location. There where 9 of us ranging from 6 year old to 86 year old. All were accommodated for.The food was fabulous, the venue is stunning and the service was exceptional .... This is nothing new at Larkins it is always fantastic. And to say you get value for money is an understatement.Thank you to the team once again

This is a family run establishment serving good wholesome food. They have recently moved to new premises but I've been informed that the character and feel of the old place has not been lost, still great value for money!

What a good night --------having recently moved to the area Larkins was recommended to me by my friends and colleges. i booked a table the other saturday evening for my wife and I. The food was fantastic and well worth every penny. There was a female artist to entertain the customers and I must say what a fantastic entertainer ( I think CLARAN 32 must be hard to please ). ...........................................Anyway folks I will be eating at Larkins again and hope the entertainment is of higher standard as last time.

I agree with other reviewers that the new look Larkins has interesting architecture and the food was very good but on the Saturday evening we went on there was an AWFUL live singer...... Maybe the idea was the more you drank the better she sounded. The music was also sooooo loud that it made conversation well nigh impossible. The place was quite full and there were 3 waitresses to serve about 150 people . We waited over 20 minutes for our bill and this in itself felt like false imprisonment because we were subjected to this harsh wailing.........I would MUCH RATHER go to one of many local pubs to have the same quality food (if not better) than have to withstand another night at Larkins. If we had been told that there would be such " entertainment" we would NEVER have gone.

Message from Larkins:- We will be responding via tripadvisor in due course but feel we should make comment here now. First of all, Ciaran32, thank you for taking the time to undertake this review. We had mixed feedback regarding this singer (see Bobby D's review above). This was the first time we had booked her and we are in two minds as to whether to book her again. For the sake of accuracy, there were only 70 diners in on the evening in question; we are only licensed for 120.

Apologies for the fact that you were left waiting for over 20 minutes for your bill. There is no excuse for this and we will be reviewing our standards as a result. Finally, we are disappointed that you feel our food was only the "same quality" as a local pub.......we would urge you to visit us again as we are sure another visit will change your mind.

I recently dined at Larkins with my family, there was 7 of us all told. This was our first time in the new establishment (my husband and I having visited the old establishment) We opted for the inclusive menu, of which we found very good value for money.........We will definitely be going back for my ...... Birthday in April. Well Done Larkins

The new Larkins' is still as good as ever the venue is beautiful and the friendly welcome is still there, the service , food, and lighting is fab we arrived at 6pm on a Tuesday.............and by the time we left approx 7.45 the place was full I think that speaks for itself that Larkins' is still the best restaurant in St Helens

I've been to new Larkins a few times since its move and the food is, as always, excellent. The new surroundings are impressive and it is interesting to think that the building was built as one of the early cinemas in St.Helens - 'The Oxford' ...........
